How To Configure Wireless Internet Access For Your Laptop
Here's what you need to know (and need) to connect your laptop to a wireless network and get Internet access.
First off, let's talk common sense. Before you can access wireless network, especially a public one place, you need to install anti-virus software and up-to-date on your laptop. Your laptop should be current with all Windows operating system updates.
That is, the next thing you need is a laptop with wireless networking capabilities are. IfYou are not sure if yours does the following, check it out:
Click View, click Start | Connect To | Show all connections, or
Click Start | Settings | (Control Panel) | Network Connections
Under "LAN or High-Speed Internet" you should have a wireless connection icon. (If not, see below about installing a wireless card).
Assuming you have wireless capabilities, continue to follow these steps:
Right-click the Wireless Connection icon.
In the pop-up menu, select"View Available Wireless Networks."
In the "Wireless Network Connection" window, click on the appropriate wireless network.
Check the box says, allow me to connect to the selected wireless network. "
An icon in the lower right corner of your desktop to appear, ultimately, that you are connected.
Open your browser and visit a site that you want. If the authentication in the wireless network is required, you are automatically redirected to a login page, whereYou must be using an approved network login username / ID and the correct password.
That is all you need.
Note: If your laptop does not already built-in wireless networking, you must purchase and install or have installed a wireless network card. There are many brands of wireless network cards. So make sure you buy a card that is 802.11b or 802.11g compatible. Linksys cards are an excellent choice and I recommend them very much. If you use another brandbe sure that the card is WiFi certified. (A list of certified 802.11b and 802.11g cards, please visit the WiFi Alliance website.)
