Laptop Or Desktop No Longer a Valid Question? Part 2 of 3
The main producers of heat in both laptop and desktop is of course the processor. Beginning with the 8086 16-bit Intel microprocessors that nearly 30,000 transistors, the 80286, the 80386 32-bit microprocessor. This i386SX was first produced 275,000 transistors as a stripped down version to reduce the i386DX with a 16-bit external bus circuit overhead on the PC. Another version, now specifically designed for laptops, the circuit had i386SL save electricity, such as sleep mode, etc. This brought the transistor count to around 3x that i386DX.
Especially in this time AMD introduced their version of the 386, which is very popular with laptop manufacturers, because they are less heat generation and power consumption characteristics.
The next generation, led i486DX floating point to the skills, with the corresponding increase in the circuit and thus the heat.
Since then, the development of the dual-core step -Quad-core processors as well as other models specifically for the different types of computers, as directed, for example, 64-bit architecture, and not just desktop or laptop.
When you consider that had mainframe computers in the 80s, a processor with similar capabilities that i486DX, in a cabinet the size of a small walk-in closet, with forced cooling with air or water that needs to be operated in a tightly controlled computer room air conditioner, you can get a better idea of the work get involvedin reducing the size of a PC and on the laptop. A multi-processor involved in a similar cabinet for each processor. Other similarly sized cabinets, the main memory, cache memory and input / output processors. Mainframes are now trending towards more PC-style circuit.
Getting back to the desktop / laptop question, what should we do about all this heat we produce? The desktop is not really a problem, we can use a standard installationMuffin fan to get rid of the heat, if that's not enough to add, another one!
The problem is quite different in the laptop. Compact size means more heat generated, due to the crowded circuit, with less ability to ensure adequate air circulation. Coolers have been from the beginning, mainly used for processors, but we still need to absorb the heat through the radiator removed. Specially designed miniature fans, combined with channels: heat, pull in the air, so that it flows over theHeatsink and exhausted like a hot air stream. These cooling systems are focused on the processor, because that is the main source of heat. Many manufacturers have used the laptop computer to himself as a radiant heat source, as someone who has actually used to confirm one of these laptops on their laps is!
A few years before the first dual-core (two processors in one) Centrino Duo processor was notorious for overheating, so the laptop shut down when in the middle of someProcessor-intensive collaboration, such as graphics or video (or both!). Later Centrino 2 dual-core processor is much more tolerant and processing could be handled with ease.
The conclusion of this item is included in Part 3, where we have the inevitable dominance of the laptop.

Review by K.. (NY) 2010-02-23 " Netbook itself, what was I suppose, in terms of performance. Battery life is very short, consistent performance by almost 50% in three days, even when off. This seriously affects the portability of the machine, as I always carry an AC adapter with me, and Acer is a board... " | |
